Start with a theme or idea you want your design to be. Look through my cards below, or on Pinterest, to find inspiration. Once you have an idea in your head, you’ll need to figure out which supplies you will need.

I recommend starting with basic supplies such as quality cardstock, pens, stamps, and something to color with. For beginners, watercolor paint or alcohol-based markers are great utensils to use.

Supplies:

If you want your cards to truly shine, then try including metallic paper snowflakes.

Just like real snowflakes, paper snowflakes can each be unique. To make these snowflakes, I used metal dies to cut out the shapes. You may also cut snowflakes out by hand.

The metallic paper really makes the snowflakes glimmer in the light. Also, in my opinion it helps to elevate the design.

Supplies:

This DIY Christmas greeting card perfectly captures the feeling of a quiet, snowy day.

Once again I used the knit pattern embossing folder to create texture against the background. The girl and her cat are enjoying the warmth of a cup of hot chocolate while looking out the window at snow.

The cozy scenery makes this card the perfect way to send warm wishes during the colder months.

1. How do I make Christmas greeting cards?

The first thing to do when making Christmas cards is to prepare the card base. Start with blank cardstock, usually white, and fold it in half.

Then, work on the background of the card. Draw out a scenery, or add texture using embossing folders. Once you have the background it’s easy to layer on festive images.

You can create fun designs by hand with stamps or ephemera bits. Add snowmen, animals, candy canes, gingerbread house elements to decorate.

Lastly, you’ll want to add a special sentiment to send your season’s greetings. Add a festive title or write a handmade message on the inside.

2. How do I make Christmas cards more special?

A good way to make sure your X-mas cards are appreciated is to add personalized elements.

Before you create, think of the person who will receive the card. What themes will they enjoy the most? Incorporate their favorite colors, activities, objects, and animals onto the card.

When making handmade cards, it’s easy to include the recipient in the card by drawing them in. See the examples above for ways to customize the cards with people and pets.

3. What tools do I need if I want to add texture to my cards?

Tools like embossing folders, textured paper, and craft punches can add texture and dimension to your cards.

I personally enjoy using embossing folders to create textured backgrounds. Plus, there are so many patterns to choose from. It’s a quick and simple way to make cards look more professional.

4. How can I involve my kids in making Christmas cards?

Involving your kids when making DIY Christmas greeting cards is a great way to start a family tradition.

Choose simple designs like handprint Christmas trees or finger-paint snowmen, and let them add their drawings or stickers to the cards.

Mail them to family members who will be delighted to receive such a special letter from the kids.

5. How do I protect my DIY Christmas greeting cards during mailing?

I recommend using a padded or reinforced envelope when mailing your cards. Also, consider adding a protective layer like tissue paper over raised elements to keep the card intact.

Make sure to mail your cards a 3-4 weeks early to ensure they get there on time. Since December is a busy month for the postal service, you want to ensure your cards not get lost or delayed.
