How to use Sizzix Big Shot machine and put it together step by step.
I made this in-depth video on how to use the Sizzix Big Shot, as well as assembling the product in order to run different die cutting templates through the platform. Be sure to watch the entire video to see my very first project I created.
This specific die-cutting machine is especially easy to use and I am confident that you will improve your card making and scrapbooking skills. With the large variety of different dies to choose from you have the option to virtually make any shape or object your hearts desires. It is excellent news to know that the crafting possibilities are endless!
The Ultimate How To Use Sizzix Big Shot Guide
1. Choose what Sizzix die cutting machine works for you
I specifically will go over how to use the Sizzix Big Shot machine in this post, but it is important to note that there are different variations of the die cutting machine. For instance, there is the big shot plus for those of you who wish to cut out larger sized shapes using it’s nine inch pathway. As well as electric Sizzix die cut machines such as the Big Shot Switch. If you prefer not to hand crank the handle to get your cuts, then this may be perfect for you. Plus, it comes in pink!
No matter what your preference of machine is, each will do an incredible job at cutting. Personally, I enjoy the traditional big shot with the hand crank because of it’s simplicity. I do not have to worry about plugging in any cords and it is able to fit in a small corner of my desk. Having multiple electric cords hanging down is something I try to avoid if at all possible. Additionally, It’s size is perfect for cutting out the majority of any shape which makes it versatile for all sorts of craft projects.
If you purchase your machine from Scrapbook.com be sure to take advantage of the Sizzix Big Shot Accessories bundles they offer. You can find some machines that come with the basic die sets included. The set I chose came with different sizes of rectangles making it perfect for card making.
2. Find Your Favorite Die Cuts For Card Making And Scrapbooking
This is the fun part! There are so many Sizzix die cuts you can choose from. If you come up with an idea there are likely die cut sets for it. As a beginner, I recommend picking out one to three dies that you really love. I chose this adorable strawberry patch set that you can see in the video above. The strawberries are perfect to use on any Summer themed layout. I also enjoy the fact that you can use the shapes over and over again for different projects.
My favorite place to get die-cut sets is online at scrapbook.com or any small craft retailer. Each new season brands will launch their new shapes and collections. Another great place to buy dies is through online groups where you can purchase them second hand. There are many scrapbook supplies groups on Facebook where people sell their gently used die-cut sets for cheap. The best part is metal die cuts are durable and do not break easily so buying them second hand may be a great option if you are new or trying to increase your collection. You may also be able to score some older collections that are no longer on shelves.

3. Additional Supplies You May Need
Earlier we talked about the different die cutting machines you can pick. Most machines will already come with all the essentials, but here are some other supplies you should keep in mind. You can never have enough cutting pads. Unfortunately, cutting pads tend to scratch up and become worn down the more times you run them through the machine. It is possible they may break or become flimsy which makes it harder to cut stuff out. You will start to see scratches on the plates even after one use. The good news is that it is easy to get replacements. I always keep one or two additional sets in case one breaks.
Another helpful supply to keep on hand is washi tape. Washi tape is great at keeping the die and paper in place. You will find sometimes while you are moving the platform in the machine the paper and die will slip off. In order to keep them from sliding off I tape both the paper and die to the cutting pad. You will want to be sure to use washi tape and not regular tape because regular tape will rip your paper.
4. Gather Inspiration For Project Ideas
Now that you are an expert on how to use Sizzix Big Shot you can start creating! If you are stuck on what to create and need some project ideas our fellow scrapbooking community has much to offer. Be sure to check out the different crafters on Instagram to see what cards they made with the big shot. Look up different hashtags to find project ideas. #SizzixBigShot #CuteCards #DieCutting #SizzixLifestyle are some of the hashtags I follow.
Earlier I mentioned joining some Facebook groups to buy supplies, but these groups are also great at offering inspiration pictures. People will share their projects they created with Sizzix and you can be inspired and find some great ideas for your own layouts. Other people may find new ways to use the die cuts that you have never thought of before! You would be surprised to see all the ways people come up with to create new cards. It is so easy to spend hours looking at all the project inspiration. Be sure to share your own work of art in the groups so you can meet others and interact!
