Unique Layout Ideas For A Charleston Scrapbook
Charleston Is Known For Rainbow Row
Supplies:
Commonly, Charleston is known for its historic buildings and rich history. When you think of Charleston the image that may pop into your head is of all the colorful, tall buildings also known as Rainbow row. Located on E Bay street it is the location of multiple multi-colored pastel homes that date back to the mid 18th century. These homes are breathtaking as they are situated on arguably the most beautiful street in all of Charleston.
While designing my Charleston scrapbook I knew I wanted a full page solely of this colorful road. To start, I cut various shaped buildings out on brightly colored paper using a Cricut machine. If you are interested in replicating the buildings yourself it is fairly easy. Using a rectangle shape simply size it to the desired height and width. Add in additional mini rectangles within the main one to create symmetrical windows and doors. Furthermore, I included palm trees to the bottom which were cut out with a die-cutting pattern.
If you are planning a trip here in the future the best spot to get a photo is across the street. This way, you can capture all the vibrant colors in the row. A fun fact I learned from a local is how residents need to gather permission from the city before they paint the exterior of their house. No houses next to one another can share the same color. Which makes sense given how remarkable the street is.
Fort Sumter Scrapbook Layout
Supplies:
One of the more historical places to visit in South Carolina is Fort Sumter. Here, the first shots of the American civil war occurred. This is another most see landmark if you are planning a visit. The fort itself is located on an isolated island protecting the Charleston harbor. It is hard to believe such battles took place out on these waters.
Fort Sumter consists of thousands of bricks. In order to replicate the fort and aide in the storytelling I hand-cut a rigid brick wall out of scrapbook paper. Unlike this paper, the bricks holding up the fort were handmade and hundreds of years old. The tour guide on our visit showed us handprints found in some of the bricks. Within the fort are also old artifacts, photos, and flags that have been safely preserved.
To decorate this page layout I cut out various sized stars and placed them on top of one another. Keeping the America theme with red, white, and blue. Also, one of the above photos you may have noticed is of the Charleston bridge. In order to get to the fort you will have to take a boat ride that takes you right along the gigantic bridge. It was quite the fun adventure and certainly worth seeing if you enjoy history.

Charleston Scrapbook On Historic Hotels
Supplies:
Perhaps one of the most fun parts about traveling is staying in new hotels. During our visit we ended up staying in the historic district at the Embassy Suites. This hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. It has a beautiful indoor courtyard with a fountain. The rooms themselves have old brick walls that date back many years. I love scrapbooking hotel rooms I have stayed in to look back at all the cool places.
In order to create this layout, I cut tiny squares of patterned paper in the Majestic collection from Prima Marketing. I absolutely love the colors and patterns in this collection. The abstract designs and lively colors are very Charleston aesthetic. Once I had multiple squares cut out, I divided them diagonally to create two triangles. Next, I adhered them down alternating the different patterns. This technique works excellent with double sided pattern paper. Lastly, I took a ruler and marked lines down each of the columns and rows.
If you are planning to create a Charleston scrapbook be sure to pick out paper patterns and colors that are found throughout the city. Pastels and nature inspired design elements are what comes to mind when I think of the history and beauty.
To create the title I used die-cut letters for ‘checking in’. These photos were taken as soon as we arrived so the saying is fitting. Be sure to take pictures of the hotel and room as soon as you get there while the room is still in pristine condition. Lastly, I included fun stickers that matched the colors. Since this is an old building I love the typewriter piece.
Magnolia Plantation And Garden Page Layout
The Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is another popular attraction to visit. With it’s rich history and expansive garden trails there is so much to see and learn. You may tour the homes, walk through the flowering gardens, visit the petting zoo, or go on detailed guided tours. The land was owned by the Drayton family for multiple generations.
There is so much to see while walking through the gardens. It is easy to spend 2-3 hours covering all the ground. There is a swampy, marsh area where lots of animals can be found, including alligators. We stumbled upon a mother alligator and her babies in the pond. One of my absolute favorite parts were all the fun bridges. The arched bridges were beautiful and expanded from one end of the water to the other. There were various bridges throughout and were also the perfect photo taking spot. Also, the Spanish moss hanging from the trees looked whimsical. Coming from the north where we we do not have Spanish moss it was breathtaking to see.
There is a guided walking tour through the Drayton family home that explains the history and stories of the families that once lived here. Our tour guide was fantastic and had so much knowledge of every single piece of furniture found in the home. Unfortunately, no pictures could be taken inside but if you ever find yourself in the Lowcountry it is a must-see.

French Quarter Pastries And Famous Pineapple Fountain
Supplies:
The waterpark front area in Charleston is a serene area to walk around and enjoy the views of the harbor. Here, the famous pineapple fountain stands. The morning before we left it was raining and we decided to take a stroll down to the pineapple fountain. Luckily, no one was around and we got to take so many pictures in front of it uninterrupted. Since this is a popular landmark it is usually very crowded.
The waterpark front area is a part of what is known as the French Quarters. Here, there are a lot of boutiques and restaurants that are inspired by French cuisine and culture. We visited a small bakery that sold handmade macaroons and eclairs. They were incredibly delicious and had the cutest star shaped sprinkles.
On this layout I laid down three doilies in the background. Doilies are the perfect design element for scrapbook layouts with their intricate details and versatility. Furthermore, I included pink and gold sequins for some extra sparkle.
I cannot wait to make my way back to Charleston soon. There is so much to see down there but so little time. Hopefully, you were able to find some amazing inspiration for your Charleston scrapbook layouts. Next time you visit the Holy city take as many pictures as you possibly can. There is truly no better way to share your travels than through scrapbooking.
